Just as HBO's Game of Thrones reaches new heights in terms of legitimate ratings, so does another more questionable metric for the show's success: online piracy. After being named the most illegally downloaded television show of 2012 a few months ago, the first episode of the show's third season has set a new record for file-sharing client BitTorrent.

According to a report on TorrentFreak, the first episode of Game of Thrones' latest season was downloaded more than a million times in the 24-hour period after it premiered on HBO, with more than 160,000 people sharing one single torrent simultaneously at one point, setting a new record for the largest BitTorrent swarm ever.
Within hours of the first torrent for the episode 'Valar Dohaeris' being uploaded, 163,088 people were sharing the torrent, with 110,303 sharing a complete copy of the episode and 52,786 downloading it. Although many have suggested that Game of Thrones' piracy popularity stems in part from international fans unwilling to wait for episodes to air legally in their region, Torrent users in the United States were the most active in downloading the episode, closely followed by those in the United Kingdom, where each episode airs on Sky Atlantic the day following its U.S. debut.
The previous holder of the most-swarmed torrent record was, coincidentally enough, also the first episode of the third season for a cult show: NBC's Heroes, which had 144,663 peers within a day of its upload in 2008. Whether or not you want to read into this coincidence as some kind of omen for the future of Game of Thrones is up to you, but if HBO announces that they're adding Robert Knepper to the cast as a sinister carny for the show's fourth season, it might be time to worry.
Game of Thrones' relationship with piracy – and that of its parent channel, HBO, for that matter – remains somewhat confused. Although officially against the notion of fans sharing the series illegally, director David Petrarca recently admitted that the online piracy was a sign of the show's success, with George R.R. Martin, executive producerauthor of the original novels, saying at a recent Q&A session that 'in a strange way [piracy] is a compliment.'
None other than HBO programming president Michael Lombardo echoed that sentiment when talking to Entertainment Weekly last week. 'I probably shouldn't be saying this,' he said, 'but it is a compliment of sorts.' Lombardo added that the piracy 'certainly didn't negatively impact the DVD sales' of the series, and suggested that it was instead just 'something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.'

In fact, Lombardo's biggest concern doesn't seem to be that the show is being pirated – although he made a point of saying that HBO is 'obviously… a subscription service, so as a general proposition… we try to stop piracy when we see it happen' – but that the pirated episodes may be shortchanging the viewers who choose to watch the show illegally.
'One of my worries is about the copies [downloaders are] seeing,' he told James Hibbard. 'The production values of this show are so incredible. So I'm hoping that in the purloined different generation of cuts that that show is holding up.'
It's interesting to see various Game of Thrones and HBO executives increasingly make public statements to the effect of, essentially, enjoying and embracing the piracy as a sign that they're doing something right. Are we slowly heading towards an outright endorsement of piracy at some point as something that grows the fanbase – or the sort of reasonably-priced HBO streaming service that fans have been begging to pay for?
